Karaoke

Life in the Kathmandu camp has stepped up over the last couple of weeks.
We now have trekkers in-house 6 days per week which keeps us out of mischief (not). We have a bi-weekly karaoke contest comprising of one song. Returning trek groups perform their one hit wonder? some more tuneful & witty than others to say the least! Some at a slight advantage with their very own producer and director of music! There are some underhand tactics going on with some groups attempting to bribe the Kathmandu judges plying them with Everest beer as they party on into the early hours of the morning ending with 4am relay races in the pool (for one trek group mentioning no names ? you know who you are - Brilliant)!
Paula & her mystery trekker (Christina) performed one of the bike tests for BBC Radio 4 this week, it certainly puts the world of radio into a different perspective. As the producer bobbed up and down recording the sounds of the bike crank spinning around and BP cuffs being fastened with velcro we wonder if people would really get to grips with the Science? After ?recording? the bike test, Jan and another mystery trekker (Graham) were recorded doing the neuropsych (memory and thinking) tests. Graham you were fabulous ? ?possum? is all we?re going to say.
Jan and Debbie have now seen four of the returning groups of trekkers. Everyone has a huge sense of achievement when we see them, if a bit worn out with the traveling back from Lukla (let alone basecamp). Trek D?! We?re well supplied with tissues (for all those sniffles and coughs!) and water (for the dehydrated weary returnees) while we?re doing the memory tests. The dehydration, sniffles and coughs aren?t a side-effect of the memory tests we?d just like to say!
As the Kathmandu Team prepare themselves for their own trek to Base Camp they are currently working out a wet wipe to BSA (body surface area) formula in order to reduce the weight of their luggage ? it currently stands at 4.89 wet wipes per metre squared for the less fussy & 8.97 per metre squared for those with OCD (Paula), using the Mosteller Formula for BSA, BSA (m?) = ( / 3600 )? .
Some of the group went white water rafting as the rain poured and lightning shocked in Kathmandu. We were oblivious to this as we sunned ourselves on the beach four hours away that is until we started to receive the hourly calls from the trekking office to make sure the river swell hadn?t swept us away to Chitwan National Park in the South.
It is not all fun and games in Kathmandu we lose members of our little family weekly the last few weeks saw the sad departures of Graeme and Derek (Optometrists), and Professor Stan(ton) Newman (Neuropsychologist) aka ?Stan the Man? and not forgetting his lovely wife Sue.

Leaving felt like a family departure but we had much time to think of you curled up in Delhi airport waiting for our flight. Sad not to hit the trail but well compensated for the time in Kathmandu. You will not be surprised to know that we miss the alcohol rub prior to eating and I play the singing bowls daily. Look after yourselves. |

By: Arthur Morgan | When: 5th May 2007 14:56 | It is rather sad that the Expedition is already starting to wind down. It has, via the Blogs, given us at home a bit of high altitude xcitement.
Keep the photographs coming until the very end, please. |
