Inaugural entry of Kathmandu Lab blog

Four members of Team Kathmandu arrived safely at The Summit Hotel on Sunday 18th to a traditional Hindu welcoming ceremony. As the brass band played the team were elaborately decorated with brightly coloured garlands. The team hit the ground running and have now completed 3 days of Xtreme-Team testing.
CPX
Paula Meale a trained intensive care nurse and research sister will lead the team of 9. She is currently studying Honda generator maintenance in Kathmandu. Paula should have been taking part in this year's London Marathon however she sacrificed her place for the greater good. She will continue her running here at altitude.
Christina Dougall is an enthusiastic UCL Physiology graduate hoping to undertake a career in Medicine. After completing this expedition Christina is planning to mountain bike from Kathmandu through the Himalaya and into India.
SPIROMETRY
Daniel Hurlbut is a Biological Sciences graduate with extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry and recent experience in I.T. Dan is keen to pursue a career in Research and Medicine. As well as helping out in the lab Dan is working on keeping the Caudwell Xtreme Everest Database up to date. After the expedition Dan plans to have a couple of weeks with family and friends in Cornwall and then hopes to return to Archway.
MEDICAL OFFICER
Dr Lynn Evans (Botswanan Princess) graduated from Guys, Kings and St Thomas? in 2004 and is pursuing a career in General Medicine. She enjoys traveling and has worked in Tanzania, New Zealand and the Channel Islands.
The remaining five Team Kathmandu members will arrive over the next few weeks. Blanche and Merrilyn will be our meet and greet gurus, Polly will be a research fellow assisting with phlebotomy, blood processing and spirometry and last but not least Jan & Debbie our very own Neuropsycholgists.
Of course its not all work and no play, the group will let their hair down with the Xtreme Team this evening for an expedition BBQ (followed by a ?moderate? amount of the fine local Everest beer). We will hopefully leave The Summit Hotel for some extra curricular activities- including Yoga, a few local treks and some site seeing - before the 1st group of trekkers arrive.
There has also been some enthusiastic learning of Nepalese (well, an attempt any way) by many of the Xtreme Team. Many thanks going to the very patient Summit Hotel staff for helping us on this matter, and for their general hospitality and warm service. The Summit Hotel is beautiful and the food in the restaurant is great, lovely big breakfasts to keep us going through testing. Post a comment on this article... Open message form

By: Karen Kilian | When: 25th Mar 2007 05:32 | I will follow your trek and climb with enthusiasm, as Nepal is one of my favorite places to visit. I have been there twice, the most recent in November, having climbed Lobuche peak. I am a pediatric nurse practitioner (having worked with congenital heart disease patients and now in the emergency dept at a Children's Hospital) and am so excited you are doing research with children at altitude! Good luck to everyone on the climb! Climb safe, be safe and Namaste! |
By: Tina Mackenney | When: 23rd Mar 2007 22:32 | Hi Paula. Great to see picture of you in Kathmandu Lab. I remember how excited you were about the trip when we met at Mac & Lisa's party. Good luck! Tina |
