Namche Bazaar Laboratory

The Caudwell Xtreme Team arrived in Namche Bazaar at 3440m on Sunday 25th March. With only one official member of lab staff present - Monty Mythen, Helen Luery flew down from Pheriche, and Liesl walked up the mountain from Monjo, after being delayed for a day by a gastric bug.

The day after setting up the lab, two of the metabolic measurement devices would not work. Staff struggled all day to get them working again. Thankfully, the equipment for the rest of the science was behaving itself. The labs are quite cold, so the equipment has to go into specially designed incubators overnight (courtesy of Andy Elson), and the staff have top consume copious amounts of hot tea! Three days of Caudwell Xtreme Everest testing was carried out in its entirety.

In Professor Mythen?s traditional style, the entertainment programme was eventful, with the grand opening of Club Namche, including slide shows, a photo competition and finally a disco.

The Namche team then said goodbye to the Caudwell Xtreme Everest team, and hello to the Young Everest Study group. The children with their chaperones and medical staff from Great Ormond Street and the Institute of Child Health were in fine fettle, and the children were competitive during testing.

For Stanton Newman, when he arrives on the 22nd:

Welcome to Namche, Stan. Now that you're having some experience at a place four times higher and probably as cold as our winters, you will find it quite warm here.

Maddi and I wish you a fine experience and great success in this venture.

Hello Uncle Alan

Thank you so much for my birthday present - I had a great day - I look soooo cool in my new liverpool kit - looking forward to wearing it when we beat Chelsea in the Champions League.

Looks like you are enjoying your time up the mountain - can't wait to see you soon.

Dan, Millie, Freddie and Jamie send their love.
