My first Easter egg experience

Chung Ta and egg!

Nearly two weeks ago I walked around Everest Base Camp for the first time. It is very difficult to walk around here because it is all rocky. Under the rocks is glacier ice. When the rock layer is thin enough and the sun strong, ice will melt. This is nice for us, as we can drink this sparkling cold water! In the afternoon it often gets cloudy and cold, and sometimes it even snows. You can imagine that it can become very slippery. I already slipped once and found myself lying on my back and four legs in the air. My whole family laughed at me.

That Sunday, I think it was the 8th of April, it was a very bright and sunny day. During the night it had been snowing though, so everything was covered in white. I always am awake very early and when there is snow I enjoy being the first animal to walk through it. My feet leave a trace.

I was very hungry and was looking for some hay that might be left over from the day before. I first walked around near the tents of our drivers but I could not find a single straw. Then I moved towards the camp where the Caudwell Xtreme team is camping. I like going close to there because there are all kinds of coloured tents. My favourite colour is red and there are a lot of red tents! There is also a very large yellow tent. We heard the team is using that as their mess tent. We always eat outside and make it a real mess sometimes as well. We then have hay all over our heads.

Walking to the nearest red tent I felt something under my hoof. As I pulled up my leg I saw something purple and gold. I bent my head to sniff at it and to take a closer look. A small piece of purple was gone and under it I saw something brown. With my nose I pushed the somewhat round thing with every step back to my place. I thought it looked a little like an egg, but the ones I have seen before were lighter brown and were not covered in paper. Back home the whole family was already gathered around a pile of hay. I showed my father my treasure and asked him about what he thought it might be. My father has seen western trekkers for a long time so he could tell me that it was indeed an egg, but made of chocolate, and specially made for something called Easter? I tried it after my breakfast but I prefer the colour of the paper! May be I could have some hay covered in purple Easter foil next year?

In April the Nepalese people also have something to celebrate: Nepali New Year or Naya Barsa (2065). This is celebrated with praying, dancing, eating and drinking.

During a year there are a lot of festivals in Nepal. A lot of them are to celebrate the numerous Gods that exist for the Nepali people or to mark the beginning or ending of a season. For example Maghey Sankranti is the first day of the Nepali month Magh in January or February. It is the end of winter. People take ritual baths in the Bagmati River, although it is still very cold. But also mothers and fathers are celebrated. Mothers Day is called Mata Tirtha Aunsi and Fathers Day is Gokarna Aunsi.
Now I know that you celebrate different festivals in your country I would like to know what else besides Easter you celebrate and how. Can you tell me about your favourite celebration day?

Namaste, Chung Ta Yak!

Ordinarily I would tell you that Christmas is my favourite celebration day, but as I write I think I would have to say that the day the summit team reach the top and, more importantly, get back down safely will be the best ever day to celebrate this year! As will be the days all the loved ones back in the UK see their nearest and dearest walk through the lobby at Heathrow having been part of something truly AMAZING - Caudwell Xtreme Everest 2007.

Then there's my birthday, of course, when I look forward to an impromptu surprise from his knibbs such as a champagne and lobster lunch followed by a hot-air balloon ride over the Serengeti and am disappointed on an annual basis.

Christmas, however, can be a very stressful event for many people. The true meaning of Christmas as a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ has got all mixed up in a mega commercial world that leaves many folk spending far too much time and far too much money in order to have a good time on 25th December and ultimately end up not having a good time at all. The stress of cooking the traditional turkey with all the trimmings is enough to cause many a dispute within the average household.

Me, I love the tree with it's twinkling lights; the Crib service; the scent of mulled wine and mince pies baking in the oven; the beautiful gift wrapped parcels under the tree; the sound of Christmas carols and children laughing; the joy of spending time with his knibbs and the children and of meeting up with the extended family and the look of sheer pleasure on everyones faces.

Enjoy the rest of your stay with CXE, Chung Ta Yak and keep up the wonderful blog.
