No Frills Pheriche Blog

The No Frills team has been renamed by a member of Trek E as ?socially relaxed but clinically sound?. We thought this could be our new motto to print on some t-shirts!!

We have had our outdoor cortex/metamax photo shoot with Trek D which consisted of me dressing up in the metamax gear and being photographed with Jim and Bugs who did not look quite so ridiculous. I looked a bit like a fighter pilot out of Top Gun so it was with much mirth that the Top Gun theme song was hummed with great enthusiasm. Harriet, the Trek D beauty was also photographed but looked a little more glamorous!! (As glamorous as you can with a plastic mask on your face) Metamax man was definitely Niklaus and he even had the t-shirt to prove it.

The Pheriche team has also been on a couple of outings. The first was to Chukking where we climbed Chukking Ri (5550m) and were rewarded with the most amazing views of Lhotse, Makalu, Pumori and Ama Dablam. The Imja valley is absolutely glorious. Jim can also claim to have had the highest pee of the Pheriche team. (Not that we are competitive).

We have had a night out in Pheriche where we changed eating venues for the first time. We went out with the BBC boys, Steve and May, the HRA doctors Ann and Richard and Ang Rita, also from the HRA. We had a lovely evening at the Himalayan complete with deep fried Snickers and Mars bars (all the nutritional quality you could ask for). We then had to dodge the slightly mad white horse that charges around Pheriche on the way home. It is comforting to know that your only dangers at night here are livestock, most of whom wear bells to let you know that they are nearby.

We also ran down to Tengboche to use the internet as a special treat but were bitterly disappointed that the man who ran the internet shop had closed it and gone to Kathmandu (5 hours round trip, the amount of time to travel three stops on the Northern line). We had to have chocolate doughnuts and apple pie to console ourselves. Bugs was very disappointed so if anyone can tell him how New Zealand is doing in the cricket World cup we would be most grateful and he would definitely look less forlorn!!

The boys muscle bulking plan has not been progressing well and now they are competing with how many ribs you can see and how much weight they have lost (Bugs: 74 kg, total loss: 8 kg; Jim: 76 kg, total loss: 6 kg). I have not been quite so lucky in the weight loss department, in fact I love potatoes and get fed far too many of them. No appetite problem either!

Our lab temperatures have reached double figures; we have been up to the positively tropical temperatures of 10C, though it still snows every afternoon.

Over and Out
Amber

Hi my little brother (in age not height damn it) Bugs. Not only did we bomb out in the cricket and rugby but horror we lost to England in the Netball. But don't worry your nephew's 10 pin bowling team won in its first tournament at a Special Olympics event in Hamilton. I'm sure he will show you his ribbon when you get home. Hes showing it to everyone.
Amber you can't afford to lose weight. As for Bugs he will fast put it on when he gets back with fish and chips and beer. Look forward to seeing you both back safe and sound. Take care.
Hugs Sis

Hello to the Pheriche Phantoms!
NZ semi-final loss to Sri Lankans. Blues semi-final loss to Sharks, Crusaders semi-final loss to Bulls. Bugs sounds like too much loss all round (beware of SABS suddenabsentbuttocksyndrome). But obviously not lost on the hair front - I know you have bonded with the livestock but you may be taking it a step too far. Miss you both!! XXXX

So great to hear news from Pheriche, there is a distinct lack of information about your lab on this site.
Glad to hear you're all doing well, thinking of you (one of you in particular).

Hi Bugs, Amber and Jim,
Pheriche seems such a long way away now that I am back home in the UK sat here in the warm, with a cup of coffee and eating chocolate eclairs - bliss. The care and attention you gave me whilst I was suffering from my headaches was second to none. You helped me through a difficult time whilst so far away from home - you were my surrogate family. Thankyou. You should win the best lab prize for putting up with a such a cold, barren location with minimal facilities. Keep up the sterling work and try not to lose much more weight. Thinking of you,
Geoff (Trek D)
