Hi Maria. I'm not a doctor, so can't answer your questions with regards to DNA and Sherpas. Kay will give some feedback on this question via her blog today. My background is one of purely planning expeditions and these have varied from Polar expeditions with Sir Ranulph Fiennes to vehicle expeditions across the Sahara desert.
3. Hi Mary.
Thanks for your kind words about the Logistics team. It has been hard work, but good fun all the same. The main thing we missed back at the office in Archway, London, was seeing daylight. We would arrive before it got light and finish when it was already dark. On a couple of occasions we did see the sun come back up in the mornings - those were long days!
We've got to do it all over again, both here in Kathmandu and further up the mountain. There has been a huge amount of snow up at Everest Base Camp, with reports of 3 to 4 feet in depth. A recent trekking team has returned from the area with reports of horrendous conditions and wading chest deep through the powder snow. It's going to be hard work for us setting up the camp there - 5400 meters high, half the available oxygen at sea-level, temperatures down to -20C, but at least we will have the best views ever. We're all raring to get going. Post a comment on this article... Open message form

Rob says good time to be away as Italy look like they should have a good result this week end. Your mother and I would so like to be doing what you're doing but bet you're glad we're not! Lots of love. | |
