Getting up at the crack of dawn?

22nd April
02:45am, it?s minus 7 degrees, there?s 2inches of snow on the ground and I?m getting out of my warm sleeping bag. Why?! Mike Brown, one of the Imax cameramen decided to get up with the Sherpas and leave at 3:00am. Although the snow had stopped, it was lying thickly on the ground, covering any sign of tracks or footprints from the day before. He stuck his head around the corner of the workshop tent, I issued him a radio and wished him good luck.
I hadn?t quite finished getting the radios ready, so sorted out the spare batteries for each set. By the time I had finished ?fannying? around in the workshop it was 4:15am, only 45 minutes before the net team would be up, so I decided to go and have a lie down until then.
No sooner had a shut my eyes, my alarm was going off. Boots back on and back outside into the cold air. I looked at the thermometer, it was now -9 degrees. I thought that Kit Spencer said we wouldn?t be having anymore bad weather?! I cautiously walked over to the dining tent, trying to avoid the hidden rocks along the path and icy patches. A few of the team had been over the day before and a simple fall out here could cause major problems.
Pema was standing outside the tent, a cup of Sherpa tea in his hands.
?Morning Pema. What do you think then??!
?Not good today. Too dangerous for Sherpa with heavy load?.
The track to Camp 1 would have been covered and many small splits in the glacier would be hidden. Since 3 o?clock I had heard about a dozen or more large avalanches, the weight of snow triggering them off.
?But Mike Brown has already left, at 3 this morning?, I said with some concern. If the Sherpas don?t think it?s safe to go, then our team certainly shouldn?t be climbing today.
?No Sherpa, no climb?, replied Pema. ?Mike is still in bed!?
Dan, Chris and Andre appeared from inside the dining tent, discussing the weather conditions and the dangers of climbing today. We stood outside the tent, admiring the sunrise, with cups of Sherpa tea in hand. I don?t normally like Sherpa tea and I don?t drink coffee, but when you mix the two, it is delicious. Mingma brought out a thermos flask and topped up our cups.
It was decided that no one would climb today and so I decided to go back to bed and try and get some sleep. With the sun now beating down on my tent, it looked warm and inviting. Post a comment on this article... Open message form

Im sorry i havent written before but you know what us country boys are like with all this new technology so typically, the night before i depart, i discover what "blogging" is.
Great to hear your news and glad to see that your journalistic flare isnt dampened by the weather which by the way sounds perfect.
I am so looking forward to the trip and more so sharing a craik with you at base camp. Please make sure the kettle is on when we arrive.

By: Mike Flexmore | When: 2nd May 2007 00:26 | Hi Andy,
Good to hear your news again. Keep them coming. Shorts and T shirt weather here today.... unlike there! As we haven't heard otherwise I take it that all the equipment is coping with the altitude, snow and low temperatures.
I'm still busy and walking 3 times a week with my local group which is great this time of year. Everthing ok here. Look forward to your stories on your return.
Mike

Good to here you're enjoying your holiday. We're all working hard here back in unseasonally warm Blighty. We could do with some of your 'air conditioning'! Just to let you know, I'm looking after the other love of you life well. Her clutch is now sorted and she's enjoying the spring air amongst bluebells and beech woods. You'll also be pleased to hear I've set about repairing holes in the floor - hopefully my artistry with fibreglass will give us some leeway before your welding skills are called upon. Anyway take care and see you in June

By: Sylvia Imray AKA Confused From Coventry | When: 29th Apr 2007 21:15 | Mac - I hope the weather improved as Kay's blog says that Chris, Mike G and B, Sundeep and Nigel were moving up the Lhotse face towards Camp 3 when your blog says that it was too dangerous to climb today!!! My hair is greying enough as it is thanks. Keep well and safe and keep blogging!
Best wishes

By: Lisa | When: 29th Apr 2007 11:27 | Hey Mac, great to have you back on the blog we have all been a little worried by your silence - not something you are usually known for! We have missed reading your tales - keep them coming and if possible I think everyone would love more pics of what you are all up to.
We arrive in Kathmandu a week today so are getting very excited - although still a little worried that I don't have enough warm clothes! Apart from trying persuade my pesky sleeping bag into a stuff pack - all's well here. But more importantly the DIY list is growing by the day which is great news for you!!
Love to you all and looking forward to seeing you next week. Lots of love Lisaxxx

It's really good to know what's happening. Best wishes to the Team & love to you. xxx | |
