Dr Mark Wilson - Neuroscience Group Leader


Mark Wilson
Mark is leader of the Brain Research Team on the Xtreme Everest Expedition 2007 and his experience in treating cold-related injuries from his time working with the Himalayan Mountain Rescue Service will be put to the test.

Mark attended Dulwich College, St Bartholomew?s Medical School. He holds degrees in Neuroscience and Medicine from University College London and Queen?s College Cambridge. Mark trained as an anesthetist and surgeon and now he has a particular interest in Head Trauma. He currently works as a Neurosurgeon and Helicopter Emergency Medicine Specialist Registrar at the Royal London Hospital.
Mark has worked in Edinburgh and London as well as India (with Tibetan Refugees), Nepal, Australia (as a GP), South Africa and California.

He previously worked as a researcher for NASA, investigating techniques to monitor intracranial pressure changes in astronauts.
His expedition work includes a number of polar expeditions including The John Franklin Memorial Expedition across the Arctic 2004. The Franklin Memorial Expedition was the first to retrace Sir John's final 200-mile (322-kilometre) trek from his landing at Victory Point on King William Island in the Arctic Ocean, to Starvation Cove.

A notable achievement, Mark has written ?The Medics? Guide to Work and Electives Around the World? ? a BMJ bestseller which is now in its second edition. He has written multiple academic publications on working abroad which can be found on his website (see right). He also manages the website medicstravel (see right) providing information for doctors and nurses planning work or elective study overseas.

Mark enjoys adventure sports such as hiking, taking part in triathlons and marathons. He also helps to run the family business part-time.
