Mr Chris Imray - Deputy Climbing Leader


Chris Imray

Chris is a Consultant Vascular and Renal Transplant Surgeon at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (1995- ) and was appointed an Honorary Reader in Surgery, Warwick Medical School (2006- ).

He started climbing at school and has subsequently climbed all over the world, from the sea cliffs of Cornwall to the volcanoes of Chile. Chris was Deputy Medical Officer and one of the summiteers on the 2006 Xtreme Everest Cho Oyu Expedition (8201m). He is member of the Alpine Club and a Faculty Member of UIAA Diploma in Mountain Medicine.

Chris? interest in altitude research began in 1988, when he joined the Birmingham Medical Research and Expeditionary Society. He has managed to combine his clinical and climbing interests by studying cerebral perfusion under hypoxic conditions. In addition, he is also one of the foremost experts on frostbite in the UK, as well as having a particular interest in acute mountain sickness in adolescents. Chris has published over 50 peer review papers in scientific journals and his PhD is on the blood supply to the brain in stroke prevention surgery and under hypoxic conditions.
