Chilling on a Sunday Morning!

It is Sunday morning, at 9am and the sun is shining. It is a beautiful day. I have some tunes going on my Nano, and things appear very chilled. Trek C are starting their second day of testing, having arrived safe and sound the day before yesterday. In fact, they were so prompt I almost did not arrive at the trekkers? camp in time to welcome them in. Helen Dwyer is missing from the photo, as she had to stay behind due to illness. We wish her a speedy recovery.

The climbers are all in camp today unexpectedly. They were supposed to have gone up the mountain today for about 10 days to start their testing in the Western Cwm and the South Col. Unfortunately, nearly two inches of snow fell yesterday evening, and the risk of avalanche led our Sirdar, Pema, to advise a further day of rest. So, our climbers, who had got up at four, went back to bed for a few more ZZZZs. No doubt they will spend the day eating, taking advantage of every opportunity to build up their reserves for the hard days ahead.

The lab staff are working hard, and looking forward to a day off tomorrow. Some of them plan to get up very early on Tuesday in order to ascend Kala Patar in time to see the sun rise. They deserve it, as they have to put in long days in the lab when we have a trek group in, and then entertain in the evening as well. Still, Everest Base Camp is an awesome place, and I can think of worse places to be working hard for three months.

I am planning to get the inevitable washing done, and maybe catch up on a bit of reading. I have not had much opportunity since I have been here. I may do some exercise as well, but I am not sure Kala Patar is on the cards just yet.

Finally, Trek F have set off on the trail, having been delayed overnight in Kathmandu by poor weather. They are really happy to be on the way to Monjo.

Hi Kay,
I joined Trek C at Dingboche as a surrogate member, having had to leave my own Trek D at Pheriche through illness. I was accepted into their team with open arms and made to feel so very welcome. In fact, as soon as John Dick arrived at Dingboche, the first thing he did was to come over and greet me, despite an exhaustive trek down from EBC - what a gent. It was a pleasure to be in their company on the trek down, where we had a great farewell celebration in 'Club Namche'. I would just like to leave this message as a big 'thankyou' to the team for making a difficult time so much easier.
regards,
Geoff

Not sure if Harriet Kemp in Grp D or E but wish her well. If she can find the key ring I dropped there I would appreciate it. Enjoy the wonderful place you are in, hope the weather is kind to you.

Hi Kay, it would make one sponsor (UCLb) very happy if a photo of the UCL flag flying at Base Camp with the 'hill' in the background could be uploaded - if that can be arranged? (obviously I'll take some when I arrive in 3 weeks...). Hope all is well up there. Cheers, David

Hi Liesl - just wanted to say I got your message via phone call - v. sad to have missed you - really annoying! Nothing to send you yet so don't worry, as usual things move v slowly and so it might just wait til you are back. Sounds like everything is going well and I read the website daily - nothing like a bit a xtreme everest to distract from what I should be doing! Hope you're fine and your toes are keeping cosy! Love from all of us at work, Mary.
